I first came across the work of Donihue when I was a teenage girl. He wasn't much older. I saw his play - which he wrote at age 18, HOLD MY HAND & TELL ME I'M NOT INSANE on Capitol Hill in Seattle Washington in the mid-nineties. I was so curious as to what this guy was like after seeing it. It was a family drama about a playwrite who's life started to imitate whatever he typed.

I started slightly stalking him. Going to slam poetry readings and art parties. I met him on briefly on several occassions. He seemed like a strange genuis. He'd appear aloof and then hyper-conversive but he always very sweet and usually had a hot blonde (or group of them) hovering around him.

I kept a lot of his old fliers and scored some scripts that from a vintage shop in Seattle. In recent times, I reached out to Donihue to ask for his permission to reprint some of the early work that I and my friends had. He at first gasped over the phone and pleaded and then after my prodding continued he agreed but declined to be heavily involved as he is knee deep in making his new film. So a lot of this is pulled from the internet, fb, my own collection, wikipedia and a few nuggets I was able to twist out of him.

It's amazing to see this underground (and often underappreciated) artist finally breaking through in mainstream indie scene. So here I present to you the history and work of one of the most imaginative and sometimes groundbreaking artists I've ever laid my eyes on.

David's work was always abrasive and emotional and very, very honest. It wasn't considered perfect by the critics. Sometimes he scared his audience. But there was always this wild, funny and smart voice that was screaming behind the silliness. Therefore, I've been inspired to collect all that I can and tell his story based upon discussions with him, others, old articles and my own memories that are stuffed in a chest in my apartment.
